Design in a nutshell | Being a trend setter!

What do you believe are the key characteristics of creating amazing design? I think that is a matter of perspective, everyone sees something different. Art drives peoples emotions in all different directions. Heres a little story that might make you think differently. Back in the days of art school, during a nude figure drawing class the teacher asked us to pick any average Joe off the street and ask them to look at our nude drawings on paper and have them tell you what's wrong. The reason? We as human beings know what humans look like. We see people in all shapes, sizes, and positions everyday. Its embedded in all of our brains on what we are suppose to look like. They can tell right away that your models torso is too long or your limbs don't make sense in that position, etc. I feel the same goes with design, most people know average when they see it and know amazing too. Your design needs to appeal to as many people as possible. It needs to make sense and has to all work together. What makes a great designer is the way they are able to take all the elements provided and manipulate color, function, text, verbiage, and story and place it in a way that is creative, new, and interesting! Copy and paste seems the easy way out and unfortunately the route many designers follow. Be a trend setter and give your clients some creativity. Simplistic and Complex work beautifully together if you know how to use them correctly!

Design is an essential and often overlooked asset to a company. Good professional design gives a company credibility and trust in the marketplace, which is ultimately what people buy in to. In today’s economy people have clamped down on their budgets and are looking for secure and familiar investments. That being said, people are choosing to do the majority of their business with companies that have a solid brand identity. For example, Sally buys her clothes and bread at Wal-mart because she knows they have low prices. Linda is taking her kids to McDonald’s for a happy meal because it’s the fast food that puts a smile on your face. Mark and Bridget are taking their kids to Disneyland because it’s magical and makes the parents feel like kids again. Each of these companies has a strong and identifiable brand and it is consistently portrayed throughout their ads, print collateral, store signage, etc. What small companies don’t realize is that a strong brand identity, if managed correctly can propel them ahead in the market, and that branding opportunities are available to them even if they are on a limited budget. People want to buy from somebody they know, buy a service that they understand and this is ultimately established by a consumer connecting with the brand.
